Yes and no. Y.A. has developed generic conventions that make crafting an original or compelling story an uphill battle, and particularly difficult for (this) adult to enjoy. (The same problem exists in other subgenres.)

True! But, honestly, I really enjoyed the New 52 origin for “Shazam.” It’s about a kid learning how to be better, not just a sweet little pastiche of childhood from the 50s, but a troubled kid who discovers a found family. It was the best, most succinct, reinvention of a character I’ve seen in years.
