tbh, I think the RPG genre (specifically in videogames) has become so ubiquitous, that it doesn’t have a ton of meaning anymore. We each seem to have our own definition of what makes a game an RPG. 

The “barbarians at the gate” comment is interesting because Sony was literally that barbarian at the gate 30 years ago.

Licensed console games died off long before Fortnite. They were just cash grabs by publishers who banked on IP recognition being more important than quality.
