I literally find that hard to believe.

disappointing Into Darkness.

After reading the article I’m breathing easier. My 2002 Grand Marquis with 210,000 miles and a distinct anti-freeze smell is safe... for now.

Similar thing happened to me once. Went to a Jared and was immediately profiled as a cheap fuck with terrible taste.

Still good for parts.

Oh well that takes care of me! I listen to all Scandinavian death metal these days! : )

I loved listening to Collinsworth talk about how stupid the whole thing was. It was like he was personally offended that something so idiotic could ever have happened.

I completely agree. If a word is above someone’s vocabulary level, tough shit. There is no way that using a word that better expresses my thoughts than a simpler one makes me look less intelligent. The english language is beautiful. Why make it more pedestrian? If someone is using the words correctly, why not

This gets on my nerves as well. I work in an industry that isn’t exactly known for being full of rocket scientists, and on top of that I work with a bunch of people 5+ years my senior. Consequently, there have been a handful of times where I get the “Hey, we get it, you know big words!” treatment. With that being

common courtesy dictates that when there’s traffic behind you, you match the number on the sign or you pull over.

That too. :)

There are ugly things, and then there are hideous things.

Any chef would prefer to hear his cuisine was “delectable” than “good.”

It’s true that “using big words doesn’t always make you sound smarter.” On the other hand, limiting your vocabulary to words like “awesome,” “judgmental,” and “foodie” always makes you sound dumber.

Sometimes it’s just misunderstanding. If you’re an engineer (gear head not sparky cause we all know their weird :p) most of what you say in your field will be understood by most of those in your field.

Please tell me you made up that example. Please.

Using puffed up language when it’s not needed is another form of anti-intellectualism, because it substitutes (perceived) style over substance and meaning.

I agree that the belittling of intelligence is a bit ridiculous. However, there is a category of pretentious people that use “big words” barely in context, usually because they just found out about said words. Those same people then act annoyed if you don’t know what they mean. Even if you know what they mean, their

Sure. I’m with you completely. And yet - what this article seems to be about is the act of reaching to use words that you don’t fully understand. I am currently grading a stack of papers written by undergraduates, and many of them seem to believe that using words they just barely understand makes them sound smarter.

I read TDKR rather late “in life” too after hearing about it’s greatness but having already been exposed to Miller’s insanity (All Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder) thinking I’d get some glimpse of what the man was before losing it. In reading the TDKR? Overrated art and, really, all of the Hallmarks and signs of
