By all accounts, the Toyota-badged Mazda2 is actually a pretty good small sedan, and better to drive than the Yaris hatch was anyway.

I’d say people who don’t want to blend in, like more interesting color choices, enjoy taking a corner a little fast from time to time, have brand loyalty, or have been wronged by Toyota/Honda before.

I was until very recently considering the same SF->NY trip as I have no time restrictions, but for the sheer cost of having a place to sleep on SF-CHI, I can’t find a reason not to fly. I have zero interest in stopping anywhere along the way, so compared to being a metal tube for 6 hours or 5 days, I’ll take the plane.
