Nintendo released its financials for the fiscal year ending in March 31, 2023. It predicted further declines from sales revenues across the board going into 2024. They would not have released a spreadsheet with so much red ink to investors and shareholders if they were more confident in sales from new hardware.

I definitely felt that from the very beginning. The interface was obviously meant to be played on the TV with your handheld tablet to scroll through all the menus separately, and it would have been great. Instead forcing it to work in handheld-only mode for the Switch made the interface horribly clunky.

Despite being such old hardware, BoTW nonetheless proved revolutionary. I don’t think anyone in 2017 came away from it thinking, “oh, what could have been!” It was already grander than anything since Ocarina of Time, and resolved a lot of open world design issues that have plagued games in the 20 years since Ocarina.
