To some degree, brakes can limit how small the wheels can be on a modern car. Especially those of the high-performance sort. I can’t run anything smaller that 18" up front on my car (with OEM brakes) and that means my sidewalls are going to stay pretty thin if I want to maintain overall diameter.

It was slower than an M5 back then too. And the M3, M4, M6, and probably more. It was never that kind of halo car.
