I'm not sure that's exactly what happened - Eugene seems too nice for that. I imagine it was a botched suicide pact and Eugene made something up to spare the girl's honour.

Assuming what the preacher said was true, of course. Somebody mentioned above that they thought it could have been a suicide pact that went wrong and Eugene lied to protect the dignity of the girl and her family.
