We’re making a lot of the formulaic nature of one very small (if hugely popular) subgenre, and I’d rather see an honest discussion covering a broader view of cinema than easy, snarky takedowns of the massive, popular thing.

For me with 2021 horror, the two ends of the spectrum would be SAINT MAUD (which wasn’t released until this year despite being completed in, what, 2019?) which was staggering, and SKULL: THE MASK, which I just watched last night and had a ball with...it’s by no means perfect but it was incredibly fun and gory.
Does this mean the person who got the original doesn’t know it’s the original? Because that’s fucked up but really funny.
I never minded the Norton HULK, and the first two THORs seemed kind of dull. But I’ve always thought IRON MAN 2 was the most misguided MCU film made.
Why are elementary level kids allowed to watch Squid Games? It’s Battle Royale dressed up in childhood games, but is all about money-hungry, back-stabbing, win-or-die failures of humanity. Why the fuck would we put that in our children’s heads?
And perhaps the casting? Wright has a very special magic with the Cornetto group that seems missing in PILGRIM and DRIVER. Those other casts are great, but the films - for me - feel a tad unmoored.
Ahh, a non-news story that admits as much and also sounds like it was written by someone who holds only disdain for the material referenced. Gotcha.
Also a weirdly shitty swipe at the MCU. Like, actors might not want to take advantage of an offer for something proven to be successful every time? Fuck them for making a choice, right?
Agreed. Those PSYCHO sequels are solid thrillers that get overlooked, and I think are far more satisfying than most of these franchises’ later installments.
I’m just happy anytime someone gives attention to JUG FACE or HAGAZUSSA. Kudos.
It really comes down to which you find more satisfying: ‘78 Halloween, or original Chainsaw. Nothing else comes close to these two as individual film achievements.
You should delete this and fuck off.
I don’t know about that, but THE MARTIAN is absolutely the type of film where you know *exactly* what you’re getting. We all knew how that would end, so there wasn’t much tension.
I’m not buying any disdain of the market or audience tastes when there’s still a global pandemic in play, and the movie-going business is nowhere near normalcy.
I feel like we already knew this story. Instead of dredging this up to remind everyone of who the assholes are, maybe spend some site space on indie films or TV series you don’t already supply four stories a week to?
Reynolds always seems like one of the nicest guys around, but if I don’t have to hear about Grinning Snarktown Shill projects for the next couple of years, I’m okay with that.
Ahh, nothing starts the day like a little AV Club responder pre-libel.
Check Scream Factory. Great Blu with original poster art.
Kind of giddy that Blind Alleys gets a mention here. It’s one of my favorite all-time horror segments. (Safe Haven, such a different beast, probably bests it by a narrow margin.)
Oh, it’s Timothy Chalam- zzzzzzzzzzz
