I reread the entire letter and can see where you’re coming from but... there is not a single word about the plight of poor and homeless people. There is no word about making an attempt to house people. It’s all about him not wanting to see homeless people, and commending the temporary disappearing of the population

Right? If you isolate that one quote, it sounds like he is going to follow it up with an essay about how heartbreaking it is to witness the plight and struggles of other human beings, and how we as a nation have to do better for our citizens.

Yep. That was the line that got me. “I shouldn’t have to see that.” WELL WHAT MAKES YOU SO SPECIAL. Jesus.

It’s absolutely amazing to hear a gentrifier complain that the people his presence priced out of American life haven’t fucked off to poorsville yet. Maybe the fucking Google shuttle can give them a ride.

I seriously can’t even believe someone said this and it was not a parody. How do you look at another human being suffering and in pain and think “wow it’s really awful I have to see this”. What a horrible horrible person.

I can’t find the other reponses! I checked his twitter (he is now arguing that homeless people deserve affordable housing and that he meant that the whole time) and the webite. Where did you find this???

I’m guessing he hung an Ayn Rand poster in his frat house in college.

There's so much I want to say that I'm verklempt. Like, the despair of others is inconvenient to you? My god.

People who move away from cities and choose to raise their kids in “safe” environments who aren’t exposed to people of color and different economic circumstances.

Usually by having shitty parents, shitty friends, or both.

My immediate respnse to him would be “Then you should volunteer to help at some shelters, here is their contact info!”

Seriously! I was reading like “okay so some run of the mill tech douche is clueless and lame” and came across that and was like WELL SIR YOU CAN JUST GO RIGHT AHEAD AND CHOKE ON SATAN’S PUTRID DICK

I mean sometimes I would rather not encounter difficult things (eg stray dogs in foreign countries) but that's reality and when you live in the real world, you don't dictate when other free beings will encounter you.

Yep. In Seattle the continuous response to calls for rent control or increased wages is “If you can’t afford to live here, you should move!!!”

took me a second, but I got there

There’s been a few responses to this letter but this one is my favorite (H/T Backtalk).

Some kids are also just naturally prone to it. I teach elementary and I have definitely had parents who were very actively concerned about their child’s lack of natural empathy.

lol paraphrasing would be ‘I’m too rich to deal with this poor people shit. GET OUT OF MY LINE OF SIGHT, POOR PEOPLE.’

white male privilege for the win!!

He shouldn’t have to see it, they shouldn’t have to live it, it’s tough breaks all around.
