OR....and this is wild....the cartoons and other colorful characters that amazed your mind as a child, that ignited your imagination and fueled your dreams....are not as cool 20 years later when you are all grown up.

Bulma says right at the start of Dragon Ball, decades ago, that Gokou is some kind of rube. He’s not smart, and Dragon Ball Super (the manga) pretty much points that out multiple times when Vejita, Beerus, and Whys all make fun of how dumb he is.

Toriyama hasn’t drawn Goku like that first image well before the orignal DBZ ended.

Except even the original had shitty animation. It was only during the Buu saga that the animation got better.

I love everyone’s complains on DB Super as if they were expecting some masterpiece in animation.

Akira Toriyama simply turns over the script, what happens after that is literally the typical anime industry working its magic on a cashcow franchise.

So after Toei gets the script, you essentially get people lower down the

I’m fine with this. I never liked the DB/Dragon Quest style. My biggest gripe has been with the eyes. The super wide eyes with little dots near the nose for pupils always made them look cross-eyed to me.

Just want to point out that there is a massive jump in age here. If the first image is Goku at the end of the original DB, it means he is about 18.
He is in his mid-20’s when he fights Frieza, his about 30 during the Cell Games and his late 30’s fighting Buu. By the time of Super he is 40ish and he starts the series

Dragonball always looked goofy and uncool though. The name didn’t help though. Once you start talking about balls of any sort then you are opening yourself up to juvenile humor.

I think the new style is fine, though the change to the outfit does look a bit strange.

I’m sorry, this is just nonsense.

People like to nitpick Super to death since it's not as good as DBZ. It's still early, all the kinks wil get worked out.

He only looked like the first picture in the early parts in Dragon Ball Z, so this is not that accurate.

Man, the internet just loves to dump on DB Super for not being some kind of transcendent masterpiece, as if the original show wasn’t a cheaply animated toy commercial in itself.

Before he had that Takahashi Rumiko-style look to him (not that there is anything wrong with that, it’s just decidedly old skool). Now he looks modern and sleek. His hair also has more character, since it appears to be moving even in still images. I say this is one instance where the Japanese fans are WRONG!

I don’t follow anime but why does it change the way it looks every so often. Is it different because there are new artists working on it.

Le gasp. How dare an artist’s personal style adapt and change over the course of 15+ years of drawing the same character!

He actually looks better now...
