You didn’t explain how, you just kind of elaborated on my question. HOW is defaulting to the spouse legal? The law should require the position or nomination go to whoever got 2nd place in the primaries or some other democratic system. Otherwise, the person on the ballot is meaningless.

I know it is common throughout the country, but can someone please explain how if a candidate dies either after their name has gone on the ballot or before they are sworn in, their spouse gets the position? Elected office should not be inheritable.
