Agreed. This solution is known, Ford did their HW and most likely went with the most cost effective solution. Who knows what other constraints there were in this engineering problem.

I had a ‘63 Midget I wrenched on for a while. It was such a simple machine, and I was surprised at how cheap parts were!
It wouldn’t matter if the nuts were missing though. Even without lug nuts on, there are still 4 studs to take the load of that corner of the vehicle. It’s missing the nuts, NOT the studs which actually carry the load.
That 48 Hz rear diff damper is a NVH tuning part, something that is tacked on as the vehicle nears maturity to reduce any unwanted driveline vibes that couldn’t be avoided with hard parts and transmission tuning.
