I find prestiging up existing gyms is more useful than taking a gym. It usually involves the same amount of effort and instead of leaving just one pokemon behind to defend you add yours to the rest of your teams. I take a gym, it’s gone in minutes, I prestige a gym, I keep it for days.

It seems they’ve compromised, you can now see “Nearby” pokemon not associated with a stop, but ONLY if there’s no stops nearby. If there are stops around it’ll give priority to those. You can’t see stop-based and nearby pokemon at the same time.

It works if you have good Pokemon near a Pokestop you can get to without much difficulty. However, I don’t see WHY they removed the nearby sightings. Why not both? It’s also annoying that they allow repeat Pokemon, so my nearby is often full of Pidgeys and Rattatas around the same stop.
