I'm on T-Mobile's $30 unlimited data plan. 5GB of LTE a month (after that it drops to 2G) and it has SOLID signal so long as I don't venture upstate where it promptly starts sucking.
I haven't changed carriers since I got T-Mobile, and I probably won't UNLESS somehow I find myself moving out of New York City, cuz T-Mobile's not as great outside of a metropolis in my experience. Read more

If you have the money to pay up-front you can save A LOT. Sure, I paid $350 to get my Nexus 5, but my pre-paid phone plan gives me unlimited data for $30 bucks a month and I'm free to take my phone and leave any time I want.
I used to want SD expansion slots but I actually forgot they were even an option until you mentioned this. I have totally transitioned to being OK with just the on-board shit as long as I have at least 32GB
