Does religion make people assholes or do assholes join religion so they can be assholes in public?

I don’t have any knowledge of Mr. Long, and I don’t really have a interest to pursue or defend him.

What about those of us who don’t believe his death was divinely inspired, but also can’t be bothered to mourn the death of an asshole with vile beliefs?

Your non sequitirs (asking us to make a value judgment regarding an ineffable personal quality, ‘honorableness’, in the name of “historical accuracy” instead of making a different value judgment—i.e., slavery is evil so f**k the CSA and its leadership) don’t satisfactorily explain why you’re so hellbent on defending,

*shrug* I don’t care.

It’s actually not hard to picture now, conservatives still are loyal to their party over anything, and their state over their country.

They also banded together to break the country.

Yes, Lee is generally regarded as a brilliant strategist who was a gentleman who was honest and loved Virginia more than anything else, and so on and so on. We can stand back and admire an individual’s skill or their generous reputation without honoring them.

The reality is that he and many white people of the time benefited from slavery, thought little of blacks EXCEPT as a way to exercise their Christian charity and duty.

If Robert E. Lee had been less loyal to Virginia, then there wouldn’t have been hundreds of thousands of dead soldiers. Without him leading the Confederates, the war would certainly not have lasted for four years. If he had respected democracy (‘cause you know, Lincoln won), then the USA might be different today.

The reality you’re imagining, where honoring men like Lee, who threw in their lot with those who wished to defend their states “rights” to own other human beings for profit is required in order to win votes, is a reality that doesn’t exist. People don’t care about Lee, and Hillary didn’t lose because she failed to pay

I would counter that doing a good job of mothering makes you a good mother. You dont need to infer when there are 18 years of experience to refer to.

And if her kidnapper was a good mother to her, what do you do with all that love and trust she’s earned? Like an adoptive mother, to her it’s all real. What a nightmare.

What a great ending but I’m sure that poor young woman is in agony right now to find out that her mom is not really her mom. I’m sure it will be difficult for her to face her bio parents. I wish them the very best and I hope she can find peace.
