Mad Love (1935) with Peter Lorre really shows what Freund could do as director. It's dynamic and sinister. And photographed by Gregg Toland so it looks beautiful. Highly recommended.

One thing I enjoyed about that book, which the reviewer above says is missing from this doc, is that Lumet does analyze his failings. He admits himself he doesn't have the light touch needed for musicals and comedies.

Cool, thanks for the info. That book's going to the top of my reading list.

I definitely want to check that book out. It's been on my reading list for ages.Does it go into much detail about the ex-wife's experience during and after their ordeal?

From the sound of it, the director had a pretty comfortable life in captivity. He said he had unlimited funds and resources to make movies so it was the best film-making experience of his life. Y' know, apart from all the imprisonment.

There was an amazing episode of This American Life about the director of Knuckle Up - Sang-ok Shin_ He was a North Korean film-maker with an ex-wife who was an actress. Kim Jong-Il was a fan of both of them so had them both kidnapped and forced them to make movies for him. They were held prisoner for several years

Liars & Prayers is highly recommended. I think it's the best album about the Bush / 9/11 era.

Active? More like hyperactive at the minute. She's just released one album and got another out in November with her new band E. I just wish she'd tour the UK more.

Until his hideous personal revelations I thought Cee-Lo would have been the perfect singer for RHCP if they would kick Keidis out.
