Interesting how these terms seem to have a regional meaning... Perhaps that’s caused by the pre-”high speed internet” age? I was taught that a cross-dresser was a normal cishet person who preferred to wear clothes for the opposite gender.

It originated as others have said, because of typewriters and such. It also has the side effect of making paragraphs MUCH easier to read quickly, because the sentence breaks stand out more.
