Two of my grandparents donated their bodies to a local medical school. We had memorial gatherings for each; at their church for my grandmother and at a fire station for my grandfather.

I’d definitely read The Undertaking: Life Studies From the Dismal Trade, by Thomas Lynch, who is in the business. It’s a great viewpoint from the other side of the grave, as it were, and he points out that people who want to donate their bodies or otherwise not have a “big fuss” still have to arrange that shit.

We did something sort of like that for my dad (he had cancer for a LONG time but wasn’t particularly interested in discussing his funeral). He left good notes for mom about bank accounts and Wifi passwords, but just wanted her to do whatever SHE wanted when he died.

Totally. I’m between donation and green burial myself, but I’d prefer that my “funeral” be a big ass picnic with bounce houses and a petting zoo.  No sense in getting all dressed up just to be sad.

I am strangely mesmerized by her videos, but I watched one episode of the show and found it really cloying and exploitative. It made me feel dirty, like here I was watching someone with a low income who couldn’t afford this elective procedure and is exposing herself for access to proper healthcare.
