I’m happy with the film the way it is, but I understand why people would have issue with it.

The issue is that Tom expects her to be an MPDG and she isn’t. As others have pointed out, he viewed her as a series of tastes, that’s not exactly what she is (the movie does suffer a bit from not getting her perspective though, I think).
