Thank you for this article! I think it can be hard on spaces like Jezebel to discuss racism where White folks are not the direct culprits. But it’s a very important discussion that needs to be had.

I read about this last week, and what I want to know is this: How the hell are we (the global community “we”) allowing this to happen? Is it because they’re black? It’s because they’re black, isn’t it?

Hands up who is most shocked by the guy’s name?

Yep. My high school experiences in a small town tell me you are absolutely, 100% correct. And I’m not even from the deep south.

Texas refused the confederate flag license plates for the Sons of Confederate Veterans, so a tiny bit of progress:

I remember the first time I saw a confederate flag. I drove from California to the south for grad school. I had never seem that flag outside of an historical movie. When I saw that flag it was like seeing a Nazi Swastica. I had a huge rush of adrenaline. I’m a white woman - I can only imagine the fear that flag evokes

If I know my git r dun rednecks—and I very much do—this will lead to a lot of “we are oppressed” confederate flag flying in antagonistic retaliation. I mean, I went to high school with people who wore t-shirts with that shit on it, had bumper stickers on their trucks, and flew that shit around at football games. It is

It’s a start. Now how about all the statues, street signs, school names etc. glorifying White Supremacy in South Carolina and throughout the South...

I can’t not star that .gif.

At least it wasn’t

Not sure I could love this comrade more.

I learned early that sometimes the people who are supposed to take care of you will leave you. That’s not a complex, that’s a fact.

someone please explain why Adam Sandler has a career. I am completely befuddled. Do his movies really make that much money?

The hottest nightclub in town is... HELL. It has everything: Saddam Hussein, KY super soakers, third leg warmers....

My Western art and architecture professor like to call that “narchitecture.” Columns on columns, yo!

omg, that’s the best idea ever though. I now want to write to neighbors about their relentlessly bad architectural choices.

Don’t really care for the tone of superiority in which this is written, to be honest—as if those who haven’t backpacked in the developing world are stuck in some sort of superficial, material lifestyle and have yet to see the carefree, makeup-less, ‘bigger picture’.

So I watched the documentary and like most people was pretty disgusted. This is controversial, but isn’t it possible that *maybe* having all these videos online that boys watch that glorify women being raped or forced into performing various sexual acts desensitizes them to the ugly reality of sexual assault and *may*
