I will give you that Gen 3-4 is minuscule since it is mostly power train. But the gen 4 motors were a big step and the block was a new casting and had cam in cam VVT. Officially 5, the easiest way to remember is that the coupes always usher in a “new generation”.

Definitely in the camp of “there was five gens”. Yes, there’s some superficial continuity between gens 1 and 2, and gens 3 and 4, but they’re definitely different. Heck, even aesthetically they’re pretty distinct, even among those two examples.
