Don’t be obtuse

The Angles

Union members are members of the public.

That sounds great and all, but the NYT article makes very clear (~3/4 of the way down, if your looking) that MTA labor costs at both the operator and manager level are way way WAY out of whack with pay in other transit systems across the country, cost of living adjusted. On top of that, only the MTA insists on having

Unions or no unions, there is still no excuse for the shape the NY transit system is in. Politicians and middling middle managers seem more at fault here.

There are just A LOT more people in New York these days.

Politicians and unions have conspired to rob the public and fatten their own wallets? I’m shocked.

“Daily ridership has nearly doubled in the past two decades to 5.7 million, but New York is the only major city in the world with fewer miles of track than it had during World War II. Efforts to add new lines have been hampered by generous agreements with labor unions and private contractors that have inflated

The trouble is that for far too long all they’ve looked at is where they can trim costs and not where they ought to be spending money. Every year of skipped maintenance is worth two years of costs when it comes to make it back up. You can cut corners and costs on maintenance (and repairs, which is a totally different

“I find it weird that Americans of all people would object to celebrations in baseball.”

It is almost exclusively old white dudes who feel this way.

Thankfully, the rapid diversification of baseball (especially in regards to the number of Latin American and South American players and fans in the US) is eroding that last

The USA vs. Puerto Rico game was one of the most fun sporting events I’ve ever been to. The energy in the stands was like a playoff game. The players were into it. It was affordable. Spending St Patty’s with the PR baseball fans was infinitely better than a bunch of drunk Irish dudes and fuckin amateurs.

I find it weird that Americans of all people would object to celebrations in baseball.

I felt a great disturbance in the sport, as if millions of baseball writers suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly choked on their indignation.

Man, how pissed is old, white America right now?

Sport as it should be.

I was at that game, and I can best describe the atmosphere as the world’s largest, most enthusiastic minor-league baseball game. Just ecstatic, everyone was so into it. Every time one of the teams would score, the players would clear out from the benches to celebrate, and they’d interact with the fans to get them more

You’re free to root for who you want, but I don’t see why you’d want to root for a team that actively honors a man allowed children to be sexually assaulted for decades because he considered that preferable to embarrassing his program.

Not until the school stops “honoring” him and the cult members stop with the “He was innocent” bullshit. Otherwise any mention of the school and/or football team brings that crap out again and again.

The punishments received by USC compared to Penn State is all you need to know about the NCAA.
