So much this. It takes soooo much time to do the necessary in-person shopping and testing.

It once took me eighteen months to look for and buy a sofa. All I had in the living room was a single Scandinavian recliner and its ottoman. I decided not to spend a lot for my dream sofa and got one half the price. 12 years later I’m ready for a new sofa, and I’m going big-ticket this time. My remaining lifespan is

One of my weird YouTube choices is watching an occasional beekeeping video... splitting hives, removing swarms, extractions, wax processing, honey harvests, equipment reviews. There’s not much about it that is pretty. Pretty messy, pretty sticky, pretty sting-y, pretty sweaty... yes, all that. That gal does not have

Damn. You are good.

Except for me, every time I’m in Southern California.

Man, I have always wanted to see the SS United States as she was. You can see the ship for quick bits on “Munster Go Home”.

I’ve stayed aboard her a few times. Yes, very much worth preserving. It’s an amazing vessel. She has an incredible history and is a design icon. The problem with schemes like the one she’s under is that the owners forget that ships need constant maintenance to stay afloat... in more rich and varied ways than a

When I first read your comment I had a little fit of pique and thought you were tapping on Orwell’s shoulder, and maybe you are, but philosophically I kind of like the idea!

Oh, no question, there will be some considerable expense!

Oh god yes, and I speak from experience. I still have the rage-induced facial tic I got from it ten years ago.

Sure, but it needn’t be necessary to go to higher ed. Might route to trade school, might route to an apprenticeship, might route to a job ... or not. I don’t think that the idea only has value if it’s a pathway... rather, I think it has value for the individual, for individual reasons that are not associated with what

We are thinking along similar lines, you and I.

Well, we already have lots of ways for older adults to engage in national service. My pop did the peace corps as a retiree, for example. I think it’s more meaningful for younger people because it creates a foundation for any choices they make later ... but that’s my view from being an old.

In Atlanta, they have “Peachtree”. Circle, lane, way, boulevard, court, bypass, avenue, street, etc., etc.

Hang on.

“If the draft is required for all people over 18, ... will people finally confront our “freedom” to murder others for our economic interest?”

I know I’m in the minority on this, but I truly believe we need mandatory national service in the US, for all young men and women. It doesn’t have to be military service per se, just service.
