I think you hit the nail on the head. The amount of rare fish and handouts like bell trees people are getting seems absurd to me. However, the breakable tools and the grind required to make buildings seems harder than before. That and the first loan seems unusually high.

YES! Microtransactions are an expected evil with these kinds of games but the EA games are so terrible that anything else will be an improvement.
