Chicago has a reputation to uphold...I remember one year back in the early 90s they were ranked 300th for partying, while Professor Swan's and my alma mater was, embarrassingly, numero uno.

I don't think this is mean at all. I think a lot of parents expect their children to go to college whether the kids are cut out for it or not, even if they'd be happier learning a trade (and less likely to get into massive debt).

Yeah—this is going to sound weird, but I'd rather have a child with developmental disabilities who was enthusiastic about learning and intellectually curious than a kid who was completely average in every sense of the word and embraced mediocrity and conformity as virtues.

I think the operative word here is "intentionally." People who prioritize intelligence above all else in a prospective mate are deeply misguided at best and assholes at worst.
