That Network Transmission track is straight fire, thank you for introducing it into my life.
That Network Transmission track is straight fire, thank you for introducing it into my life.
When I first got this game way back when and discovered Redbook audio, Virtual On didn’t leave my CD player for probably two solid weeks, and this track in particular was in alarmingly-heavy rotation. It’s like someone managed to synthesize pure joy.
I never spent much time with this one because it was hard af and came out around the time when tons of JRPGs and similar-type games were being localized, so it kinda got lost in the shuffle for me. Glad to have it back on my radar, these tunes are indeed radical. Been meaning to check out Gravity Rush for a while as…
This soundtrack is absolutely amazing! One of my favorite things about this column is discovering these incredible soundtracks from obscure/horrible games I’d never play. This one and Tama have been wonderful discoveries that would’ve otherwise remained forever hidden from my aural sensing circuitry. Keep up the…
Just a heads up in case you weren’t already aware, the original XBox’s internal clock is powered by a capacitor that’s prone to leaking acid all over the motherboard and killing the console. There are some pretty good resources online that show you how to remove it, which is much easier than it sounds, and prolong the…
PlayStations are dirt cheap and that game in the condition you’re describing goes for ~$150. I’d strongly suggest you invest in the hardware unless you’re strapped for cash. Or you could, y’know, sell it to me ;)
Ugh, replied in the wrong place. But Wings of Wor is awesome!
I agree about foreign language vocals; heck, I barely even pay attention to the literal meaning of English lyrics most of the time. Ever checked out Sigur Ros? They sing some of their songs in a made-up language called Vonlenska, which translates into “Hopelandic.” I think it’s kinda cool because it turns the vocals…
I was surprised how much of this game’s soundtrack was familiar to me despite not having played it in ages. Definitely need to track down a copy. Also, thanks for keeping Morning Music alive while on vacation, it’s pretty much my favorite thing on the Internet atm.
I’ve seen clips and gifs of this but never the entire thing; what an absolute marvel of style and technique!
Oh man, Venus Wars and Patlabor are two of my favorites. I think the second Patlabor movie is even better than the first, but they’re both incredible. I’d also add Wings of Honneamise (a.k.a. Royal Space Force) and Robot Carnival to the badass late ‘80s sci-fi anime canon.
As actual games, the DKC series has not held up for me now that the novelty of pre-rendered sprites has long since worn off. Their soundtracks, however, absolutely stand the test of time and really utilize the sound hardware for maximum “SNES music” effect the same way Yuzo Koshiro’s best Genesis compositions do.
Despite owning the Sega CD release, I instead played all the way through Lunar:SSSC on PlayStation and loved every second of it. When I clicked on the YT link in this article, though, I was floored with how much better the Sega CD music is. I’ve always been a fan of Iwadare, but the compositions take on (or regain,…
!!! Can’t believe someone else was on rec.games.video.sega! Always thought Vic was kind of a jerk/troll on Usenet, but I respect the role Working Designs played (pun somewhat intended) in helping increase visibility of JRPGs in the west. And you can’t really hate on their packaging, despite the numerous delays it…
I have nothing but fond memories of both Super Mario Galaxy and Twilight Princess on the Wii. As someone who was completely skeptical about motion controls, especially for mainline entries in storied flagship titles like Mario and Zelda, I never had any issues with the way either of these games played and it’s been…
I had no idea Stewart Copeland composed the music for Spyro, what a crazy world we live in!
Starred for link referencing Descartes, Sartre *and* Wittgenstein.
I have never seen a more perfect transcription of anything. You might’ve missed your calling as a professional closed captioner (or maybe you are one...?).
I didn’t know Gyruss was ported to the 2600, I’ll have to track down a copy!
Starred for talking about Golvellius.
