Toyota moves/evolves slowly. Very slowly. The Prius was a anomaly of rapid innovation. They are still trying to get over the shock of that to their corporate culture. I’m surprised they are not still selling looms...

Kind of depends on the market though.
Good lord do people have short term memories with gas prices...
I went contrarian and bought a full sized pickup when gas hit $4. I got a sweet deal.
Exactly. That wasn’t that long ago. Gas prices can and will go up. I guess it’s similar to the ARM mortgage thing. Most people are terrible at future planning and don’t think that rates / prices will go up in the future.
No. I have no faith in the general public to do anything remotely intelligent. Personally, I’m hopeful that gas prices stay high enough to push people into smarter choices.

Most modern small to even medium sized cars and crossovers are now getting 35+MPG and with the more widespread availability of hybrids and plugin hybrids that number is even higher then that. Leave the cities and go out to anywhere USA and 90% of the vehicles seen are…
Half of the population of this country is functionally illiterate. You expect them to make informed and logical choices when it comes to purchasing a vehicle? Wishful thinking my friend.
Americans BUY into automobile dependent land use for “reasons” and then complain (ok, really just lose their minds) when that dependency bites them.
I live on the fringe of a metro area in the upper Midwest. I don't feel sorry for them, because every time gas prices drop for more than a few months, they celebrate by going out and buying a bigger truck and/or more gas powered toys, then get mad and complain that they can't afford gas when the prices go back up.…
1st Gear: Maybe if Americans had actually learned a lesson from the the last gas shortage and didn’t insist on driving giant behemoths of vehicles, this wouldn’t be an issue.
I’m glad I’ve stayed with vehicles that get good gas mileage and didn’t let the expectation of good fuel economy get overridden by other factors just because gas was cheaper for a time. My Sportwagen may not be a speed demon that’s filled with luxurious features, but I still average over the published 32mpg in mixed…
Saw this variant on a Volvo wagon recently:
