Not useless, but it punishes you for being too trigger happy about your abilities. A lot of times that's what you want your opponents to do so that you know they have no mana and you can get the jump on them. Being too spammy removes any strategy involved and dumbs a game down.

It's graphical updates like this that make me think that a Final Fantasy VII remake in all the HD glory would not be able to capture the charm that the original had; I think they'd just overextend and end up with something too modern.
