Robocop was very influenced by the comic books of the times. Frank Miller was involved in later sequels, but often neglected is Howard Chaykin's influence on the first one. Check out Chaykin's American Flagg! comic book of 1983 for a similar vibe from that time, and for some of what is missing in this modern re-make.
