I love that my country’s leaders and some of its citizens care more about some boogeyman that is China buying our data than the lives of children in school.

Google and Meta already have TikTok clones, and that’s the real reason behind the ban.  They aren’t nearly as successful with their knockoffs, they need the original taken out of commission.

If this was actually about America’s data privacy this hearing would mean something.  As it is it will just be a big dog and pony show.  The worst kept secret in the world is that this is all being orchestrated by Zuck. TikTok is stealing away too much cash from FB so the Lizard Man is pulling strings behind

Ok, that supermarket displaces 50 homes bc of all the space taken up by surface parking, not the store itself. Or you can do what they do in a lot of other places- build a supermarket and business on the ground floor, and housing above. Try looking at a map of any suburban commercial development and you can see how

Before cars it was the only type of city.

Please stop telling on yourself.

Let me ask you this- if all the places you drive in a day started charging you for parking (your office, the grocery store, Target, Walmart, Walgreens, that cool new restaurant, etc) would you still be interested in driving as much? Like, it now costs you 7.50 to park at the grocery store. $3.50 for the privilege

The issue is the time they waste in transit period (whether they own a car or not) because the inexpensive housing is always a long way from the work. The problem is not public transit, it’s housing. And when we waste HUGE amounts of space on parking for people who own cars, That’s part of the problem.

What a sh*thole country. Why would you live in the USA willingly?

What’s always funny and telling about this is how mad some people get about the idea that someone might choose to try and make their life less car-centric.

Its really important to remember that the actual complaint about Tiktok is not that its spyware for the Chinese govt, its that it isn’t spyware for the US govt.

Yeah I love cars too, but I hate the simple cost of owning and operating them. If I didn’t need to have a car, I wouldn’t have a car despite my affinity for them.

Combine the car-free zone and no minimum parking or single-family home rules with a law similar to the Japanese requirement for proof of off-street parking for car purchases, et voilà!

Maybe, and I’m just spitballing here, the people who choose to live in the car-free neighborhood are the people who choose to not own a car at all.

Cities can change. We don’t have to keep making car ownership mandatory. I love cars but I hate commuting in them.

Japan also had some growing pains to make the Shinkansen happen it went double over budget, as it happens everywhere, and like that once it’s operation people rarely remember the initial budget, it just need to be delivered first. I really do hope I can visit the US and the West Coast and not deal with the nightmare

I’d be interested to see how the initial cost was set, and EXACTLY what has caused it over budget. Not interested enough to do any research, but you know, Internet level interested. Is it because they just said “we can build for $1 million per mile” and got the contract, knowing it was way under and they’d get paid

He’s not wrong to be mad. Look at Aston. They did what everyone eventually does after a big rule change and copied the best design. If Merc had done that, they’d be fighting for at least second, not fucking around as the 4th (for now) best car.

Exactly right.

there won’t be a driver display behind the steering wheel. Instead, there will be a center-mounted circular screen to display all the relevant information.
