Pretty sure I saw animation stills in Haruhi where everything but the eyes were filled in, because they were going to be digitally added in post.

Character designer is Yoshihiko Umakoshi, who also did Casshern Sins, the 2005 Guyver series, and Saint Seiya Omega. His designs are very stylized and unconventionally cartoony for anime, but they lend themselves really well to action scenes. I hope you can get past it one day.
