The timing of the gates is all determined by the position of the sensors on the rails. The system has no way of knowing that a train is just about to pass over the sensor in advance of it doing so without either:

Notice there are two sets of tracks... I’ve seen this happen many times: train going one direction on track A passes through crossing and arms come up... only to come back down for a train going the other direction on track B.
