Actually a laptop might be perfect for many people. Low power use, quiet, compact. I've been using an old laptop for this purpose non-stop since October 2012. I don't see why it would overheat any more than normal laptop usage and many people use their laptops all day long.

you certainly can use a laptop as a server for some things, (file server, etc certainly) things that require lots of processing power I would avoid due to the fear of causing the laptop to over-heat.
