I agree with the description that Banks marries hard SF with, uh, the ability to write well. His non-genre work has shown a sensibility that few SF writers have been able to match (even when its quasi-SF, like Walking On Glass).

Elf was a great little film. I never got the impression it was any kind of blockbuster and am surprised that the studio was willing to put up $29 million for a sequel.
