Did it ever occur to you that it's possible to enjoy both Tron and Neuromancer
"Dude", did you bother to read the post above where i said that Neuromancer probably deserves a place in the SF canon?

ah, so i was right all along
I started off by pointing out that - at the time Gibson came up with the term 'cyberspace', 'Tron' was already in cinemas - so he can hardly deserve credit for the concept.
wow, you're really worked up about this
1) you sound like it
are OY1 and unco253 the same person?
Just wondering.
which lit the fires of a thousand imaginations, a badly rendered disney flick or a well written short story by Gibson?
Hmmm, Omni's circulation in 1982 vs Disney's box office receipts for Tron in the same period.
kemoly
I never expect to be taken seriously but, yes, 'frakking' is the acceptable alternative to 'fucking' among the cool kids these days.
"vapid pointless trolling nihilism"
Dude, i asked a serious question which was: how much credit does Gibson deserve for coining the phrase 'cyberspace' given that the identical concept was embodied in a hollywood movie that came out the exact same month?
no, thank *you*
I'd like to thank cyberOY and others for plumbing further depths of dour and humourless fanboy adulation.
william gibson also invented the matrix
Apparently he had a short story out in April 1999 about humanity obliviously trapped inside an artificial reality constructed by computers.
suck it new2053?
Newc2053? Why bring him into this? He's done nothing to hurt you.
"Gibson's ideas have been important to our species"
Yes, it does sound hyperbolic. More than that, it sounds bloody silly.
"someone who has actually done something important"
Wait, who are we talking about here?
"as subtle as a bag of hammers"?
Dude, take another look at the Florida Times-Union cartoon.
technically, yes, its parody rather than satire
The point is that the cartoons are meant to be ironic.
my spanish teacher
was Burkinabé-Laotian.
"Tron was all on one system"
Says who? The MCP spoke about accessing the Pentagon, so it was obviously more than just a single system. Nerd.
"outside of the fact that it's in the onion, how can you tell?"
you can't.
GIBSON IS OVERRATED
William "I invented Cyberspace" Gibson?
"The editorial cartoonist for the Onion"
is, in case you hadn't pegged, a satire on right-wing editorial cartoons.
Matrix vs eXistenZ
I reckon the Matrix counts as a computer because we meet the Architect and, in the shitty third film, the Giant Talking Head in the Computer City.
