What kraenk said. The Mythbusters did an episode on this. Even with a powerful 12 gauge shotgun, you're only gonna knock someone back a few inches. And if they are armor piercing bullets, they just punch straight through without slowing people down. <— They found that one out during the Black Hawk Down incident..

I got to do mocap for my classmates when they did a zombie short. Its actually really hard to convey getting your head blown off with a shotgun without getting hurt. Despite 2 feet of padding...

I always hated that part of Gladiator. In ancient Rome, thumbs down was good, thumbs up was bad. The idea of thumbs up being good was from a 19th century painting of a Roman colosseum. But Hollywood must cater to the uneducated masses... Or at least the less useless trivia inclined :)
