To your first point, she’s not a game developer, but she still could’ve written the game’s story or been asked for input on the game’s story. It’s not totally outlandish for people to be concerned that she had some involvement in parts of the development process.

Except they do.

There are a lot of right vs. left issues that I’m ok with disagreeing on. We can disagree on how high taxes should be, how money should be allocated to government agencies, how tight industry regulations should be, what punishments are appropriate for which crimes...

People are allowed have their beliefs even if they differ to yours, this isn’t a fascist world. If she wants to believe what she does then leave her to it. Just like religious nutjobs can believe that homosexuality is wrong because its written in a fantasy story.

*Of course* people are allowed to have their beliefs. I am just as entitled to never wanting a single cent of my money to be given to that person. Boycotts are not persecution and are certainly not censorship.

My rule of thumb on the art/artist divide is whether or not the artist can still benefit from it. H.P. Lovecraft? Vile racist, wouldn’t want anything going to him, but he’s long dead so I can read his work. Ms. Rowling, transphobe, still collecting checks, so I’m out. Same deal from Michael Jackson and R. Kelly - I

Death of the Author is really just a theory about whether you should factor in authorial intent when analyzing a text. It says nothing about whether one should financially support an author who you find to be an abhorrent person, and anyone who uses it as a defense for doing that doesn’t understand what Death of the

I’m glad this is getting this sort of reaction, but even as a trans person myself I can’t help but think that we (collective we) should have been taking a closer look at this series prior to this point. The ‘greedy, hook-nosed goblins’and slaves that enjoy being slaves probably should have started setting off alarm

To respond to your second argument, people are not obligated to purchase products that give Rowling money. Choosing to not purchase a product that conflicts with your morals is not inherently fascistic and is a tactic that has been used by groups all over the political spectrum. Rowling is allowed to say whatever bigot

Yeah dude, no one is saying she can’t have her own beliefs.

You think the right throws away “allies” as freely as you do?

“You won’t accept literally anybody on your side regardless of what they say and do? IDIOTS!”

No one who speaks or acts out against Rowling for her transphobic beliefs legitimately believes that doing so will stop her. She is literally richer than the Queen and as much as she likes to act like she’s been “cancelled” she still has tons of money and an extensive platform through which to speak. Hell, you can

Sorry to phrase it this way, but unless your question is purely rhetorical, it borders on infantile. Even if Rowling’s fee structure doesn’t include royalties (nearly an impossibility), she was paid in some form for the license, and supporting this product financially affirms the power of the license and helps Rowling

haha i love the snark with which this guy brags about how hypicrotical and unprincipled his side is.

If she wasn’t getting a cut, they’d have said that.

I just finished Horizon Zero Dawn for the first time earlier this week (and loved it), but having rewatched the Forbidden West trailer, I didn’t see anything that was radically beyond the scope of the original. Zero Dawn is still an amazingly gorgeous looking game, even on my base PS4, and it performs incredibly well

At $60 dollar industry standard, all these publishers which are pushing for a price increase and posting record profits, paying their executives millions of dollars a year, and exploiting their staff to the point where people are leaving their “dream job” for other industries. No we don’t need to pay more to develop

And don’t forget microtransactions, lootboxes, DLC, tiered editions, battle passes, preorder bonusses, (multiple) season passes, sponsorship deals and so on and on and on, because that’s the one thing everyone always conveniently forgets to mention when they peddle the narrative that “game prices have remained stagnant

Is it REALLY a big deal to play your games on the system they released? Are you trashing your PS4s?
