The only Christians in this country who I genuinely think can claim persecution are black congregations whose churches keep going up in flames.

I’m not 100% sure myself, so someone correct me if i’m wrong, but i’m pretty sure that the preferred pronoun and gender applies retroactively, and if for some reason, it matters whether or not the person has transitioned, you would just mention that they were pre-transition at the time, but still use their preferred…
Yes, correct etiquette is that pronouns apply throughout the person’s lifetime unless they request otherwise. Even if quoting an older article, it’s better to add a correction, for example “he was so excited about his gold medal” would be quoted as “[She] was so excited about [her] gold medal.”
2015 UPDATE: We no longer need to hear everything white people want to say.
Here’s a picture of the cyclist in question.
I read Looking for Alaska because of a friend’s recommendation, and I found it to be so self-important. He tried waaaay too hard to be deep. I haven’t read his other writing.
The Help made me so mad.
Totally agree. It kind of just ruins any depth and texture to the characters. By treating these oppressed folks as just saints and martyrs, as springboards for the enlightenment of the bigoted characters, you deprive the ‘other’ of humanity and complexity, which does the opposite of what you were going for.
I read the first YA novel you mentioned, but did not pick up on the exploitation. I’ll have to revisit. I agree that For Such a Time is a revolting premise. I really am disgusted by the neoconservative Christian “embracing” of Judaism, because it’s all based upon their end times fantasy where Israel will go to war…
So one of the commenters on SBTB said the following statement and it so perfectly summed up what I was trying to say in my longer post I have to quote it here:
Thank fucking god. I was wondering if this would make its way over to Jez from Goodreads. Not enough hell has been raised about this insanity. As a Jew, a romance reader, and an anti-hero lover... this story is so beyond fucked up, it’s being considered as Trump’s presidential running mate.
I would give it 0 grogger waves.
“Jewess”
WHO CARES!
