What happened through opportunity? Michelle Obama went to Ivy League colleges and was a successful lawyer. Not to downplay modeling, but I mean, come on.

Didn’t watch the convention (didn’t feel like barfing in my mouth for hours), but I suspect he *had* to get women whose sons were killed in TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS because he just couldn’t find any floods of mothers who sons were murdered by these evil undocumented workers. I don’t devalue these mothers’ pain, but dear god,

This. I live in a crappy red state (for school reasons, I assure you) and shit is getting real here. I’m not voting for someone who supports bathroom bills that harm the trans* community and I’m not voting for anyone who takes away my ability to get reproductive care. Any Bernie supporters who are pivoting towards

I really hope that Winona’s interview won’t be used to invalidate anything that Amber had said. I grew up in a very abusive home and abuse just isn’t that simple. My parents targeted me a lot and never hit my brother for a lot of complex reasons (they preferred a son; my brother could easily defend himself as he was

I’ve also gotten the sexual harassment comments. :/ Most thought it was funny. I hate academia, too. I’m still in it because I honestly have no idea what I’d do on the outside, but I am frustrated with the current state of teaching and the appalling lack of resources for part-time faculty.

The not nurturing complaints kill me. My fellow TAs and I meet with students outside of class constantly. I read their papers on my downtime through email or drive to help them revise better. I help them brainstorm ideas. I’ve let attendance policies fall by the wayside in the faces of family emergencies, and I’ve

As a former TA and now faculty member, I can tell you that student evals are so horribly biased against women that it’s surprising they still count. All my fellow female professors and I are constantly criticized by students for tone whereas male professors who are equally stern are considered “just strict.” We come

I’ve been a fan of hers since I was a little kid, and I’m so jealous you saw her in concert. :) . I’m always so confused by the hate emanating from people on this site (not on this post in particular now, but on other posts) towards her. She’s an easy target because she’s dorky and sings so earnestly. Off to listen to

I was hoping after this atrocity that the GOP would have a hard time pushing forward legislation that hurts the LGTBQ community, but instead, it looks like they’re just going to pretend like this community wasn’t targeted by the same rhetoric it promotes.

Yeah, I remember from a few linguistics classes that this was common of the working class (across many races). Even where I’m from (a poor-ish region of a mid-Atlantic state), we drop our g’s.

the story of Thomas Granger is THE ONLY THING that is interesting in that whole piece: written by someone forced to take 4 classes on Puritan Lit in undergrad thanks to a super small and highly specialized English department :/

I watched the show (as Ellilady says above, mostly out of obligation towards the end), but really, other than the cliff-hanger, the show had kinda wrapped up. The Layla story line is going nowhere, the Maddie line is awful, and the Scarlet/Gunnar story line is circling the drain. The show feels tired and stretched

I talk about Jane the Virgin to anyone who will listen/owns a tv. Such a smart show and super sweet and super funny. Why isn’t there more buzz?

Yeah, I was being flippant. I agree, though, and actually really thought that the representation of men on this show was really interesting. And it wasn’t without its depth: it showed a lot about male friendship (I don’t think it always painted female friendship in the best terms, as women often were

I’ll miss it, too! And I think it’s a really unsatisfying end because there are a million loose ends. And I thought that the music will still pretty good, too.

HA! I love this! Layla was such an unfortunate character. They really had no idea what to do with her. If I had to see that sad face one more time when they tell her that her album will fail (because it always fails, duh), I might follow Jeff over the side ;)

I will unabashedly miss it, as I watched it every week. That said, the writing was just not strong. They had no idea how to propel characters’ stories forward and circled back to the same issues. Characters were killed off, shuffled away to jail, or repeated the same story line of falling for men who clearly didn’t

Very wise and very true. It took so long to forgive myself.

Yeah, I agree. My mother falls into the fake repenting category. She contacts me despite all attempts at blocking her, lies about how her therapist says I owe her forgiveness, stalks me by changing email addresses/social media names, and the closest she’s done is say she’s sorry for “whatever happened” and then

Yeah, I’m not as angry as I was, thanks to therapy, but forgiveness will never happen. I don’t owe anyone forgiveness.
