The thing you’re missing about my point is this: Even if he stops, do you think you’ve made a difference? Or will he just be replaced by someone else, someone who says the exact same things but with utter belief in them and advocates even worse, next time?

You’re missing the point: The real-life impact doesn’t matter for trolling. Sometimes, it’s a bonus. And sometimes, ruining someone’s life is part of the goal of trolling. Trolling is a method of getting laughs when you honestly don’t care if other people get hurt because of what you say.
