I appreciate your reply a lot. Especially since I was undeniably defensive in mine. I'm just a bit fed up with this topic and I always struggle to keep my irritation at bay. Apologies.

There was more to her character than that. And I do love her as an actress and a personality. Having said that, I think it was ridiculous that Lupita didn't win the Golden Globe. Her acting in 12 Years a Slave is in a different league entirely.

Harsh yo. Funny as hell though :)

I've been thinking about this and I think I can see why she was nominated. Her character is a bit nuts and very annoying but yet oddly endearing and vulnerable. She could have come across as unbelievable and over the top but she nails it. There's a restaurant scene where she goes on about the smell of her nail polish

I hate to compound any disappointment you may already be feeling but I think seeing it in 3D was magical. I can't imagine that a 2D viewing could even begin to match it.

The volume of cleavage in this film deserved its own nomination...

I can live with this. Definitely not feeling too enraged this time around. Very very happy for Lupita! Well deserved!

I'm a dark skinned black woman who has experienced a lot of beauty privilege throughout my life (I'm putting it bluntly, as I always do during these discussions when the tone turns particularly pitying - it's not my usual way of talking about myself). I have said it on these forums many times and I try and repeat it

Fact is, we as black folks ... have to fight like hell to stop buying in to this bullshit. It is so absurd that anyone should ever have to "prove their blackness." And it is just as absurd for anyone to feel "too black."

I read about these dolls in the guardian yesterday. It made me want them!

I get so damn annoyed when I meet black people who have internalised self hate to that extent. They are a f*cking mess and a goddamn liability. Maybe it's not helpful for me to react with such anger but it is just so destructive! And it feeds the ridiculous idea that 'light' or 'white' is better - becuase it's like

If it's not about white privilege and power how come white people have modified their view in relation to themselves and now value tans, but the whole colourism thing remains in issue if you are not white? Half of your argument seems to acknowledge the way in which lifestyles have changed in that wealthy people can

she is beautiful, simply stunning. Who is that?

Please be fair. Follow the train of the conversation I've been having with Rocza. What he or she was claiming was that the film has not been well received overseas. This was said as a categorical statement of fact. S/he neglected to mention that it has yet to be officially released and yet to be officially reviewed in

My problem with what you are saying is that you are assuming all of these things about the film without any evidence. And the reason I've responded to what you had said is that I actually just assumed you were right and only stumbled upon the fact that it has not actually gained worldwide release by accident.

Oh come on. You know you were misleading people on here. And now you're just throwing your toys out of the pram because I pointed out (perfectly politely initially) that you were misinformed.

American films generally tend to sell best in English speaking or culturally similar countries so Europe would make sense a one of the main places to gauge this kind of thing...

Thanks, it's really useful that you've clarified the kinds of sources you're getting these critiques from.

12 Years a Slave (at least from reports of both American and non-American friends living abroad) isn't resonating with foreign audiences...

It wouldn't be true to say that 12 Years a Slave is not doing well outside of the US (American films generally tend to sell best in English speaking or culturally similar countries so Europe would make sense a one of the main places to gauge this kind of thing); it's currently the number one movie in the United Kingdom
