IDK, but the black line looks to me as more like an artifact of the photo or attached trim on the luggage cart. Like your observation on the strange placement of the left hands though.

As envisioned in their 1940’s role as the ultimate naval “heavy hitter” then, yes, the BB’s are obsolete. But if they are viewed as a 21st Century “weapons platform”, not so much.
