Exactly what a gay dude WOULD say
“I’m going to f—k you to make you realize you aren’t gay.”
This article should be updated with the response from Catherine Morris on Instagram which ironically affirms the criticisms that the thought behind this event is entirely unfocused other than “men are bad”.
Does a degree from and curatorship at the Australian National University not count?
And Just Like That, I’m A Virgo: the new show about realizing your zodiac sign isn’t what you thought it was
As a stand up comedy addict, this lady isn’t funny. Not saying I don’t like her, or that I hate her content. She’s just not funny. Not an insult. Stephen Hawkins wasn’t that funny, either.
I assumed they watched Nanette so they were under the impression she was not a comedian.
It’s interesting how in the span of only a few years, Gadsby’s whole shtick (once thought by critics to be cutting-edge) now just seems like a hopelessly outdated relic of the previous decade. Their “TED Talk about trauma disguised as a stand-up routine” approach was never going to be the future of comedy, as overly…
Welp, I sat through her yelling-at-people “comedy,” and this take on “curation” sounds like your friend-of-a-friend who just graduated Smith yelling comments out about mean old dead white men from across the room.
In fairness and empathy, I should mention that it’s always been hard for them to attract attention and funding when world-class museums like the MoMA, the Met, and the Guggenheim are just a 45 min subway ride across the river in Manhattan. It doesn’t see much tourist traffic for that reason. That’s a tough situation…
“Get that bitch a Picasso. Bitches LOVE Picassos.”
Sounds like this exhibit is very on-brand.
Left out of this article but very much discussed in the NYT piece is the fact that the Picassos obtained for the exhibition are pretty much whatever random stuff they could get. There’s no effort to find pieces that demonstrate Picasso’s misogyny or his cultural impact. It’s just “here’s some Picassos!”
The Brooklyn Museum has been a sad place for years now.
Is this a joke? She went to school for art. Those were her first jobs, and that's why she talks about it on stage.
As with so many of these things one wonders precisely who it is for.
If the thing most worth talking about with regards to Picasso’s art is the misogyny of the artist it ought not be displayed in the first place. If you wanted to discuss the misogyny in relation to his art’s immense cultural impact that ought to have…
I really like Gadsby and Nanette, but if the criticism cited here is accurate, then yea the exhibit sounds lazy and flat out bad. Which is a shame for obvious reasons, but also because I don’t want to be put on the same side of an issue as Gadsby’s critics, who up until now have mostly just been terrible people.
I hate that I have the curse of feeling embarrassed for other people. This is cosmological-level cringe.
“After having criticized Picasso in their lauded Netflix special Nanette, Gadsby was tapped to co-curate an exhibition to mark the 50th anniversary of the artist’s death.”
Fun fact: Hans Christian Anderson was inspired to write The Little Mermaid after the young man he was in love with married a woman, and he fell into a deep depression. So really, Ariel is a closeted gay man.
