You can drop the “franchise capper” caveat. Each LOTR movie was 3 hours, so Return of the King wasn’t unique in this regard. Even for Marvel, no Avengers entry had been shorter than 2hrs+20 minutes.

The thing is it’s not even just about the number or proportion of long movies, like over 2.5 or 3 hours. It’s that even “short” movies are over 2 hours. Even in the article, they point to Shazam 2 and Quantumania at a little over 2 hours as “they didn’t feel interminable”.

Considering that the Telegraph, who noticed the changes, say that these new editions have been out since 2020 and the knowledge of the changes don't appear to have come from the publisher or Christie's estate, it doesn't seem to be an advertising thing. I don’t think that applies to Christie. Her books still sell in the millions yearly. The company that owns her copyright recently made $33M in one year. The 2017 Orient Express grossed over $350M.
