You hit the nail on the head about how new viewers may like the "plot by any means necessary" direction that this season has been so far. I'll also think that this appeals to people who just simply watch the show for entertainment but don't care too much about character consistency nor development.

Let's hope Ian doesn't end up like Tom. Though I wouldn't put anything pass the Shameless writers.
