Really love to see an author say he’ll put the tweet in proper context and then absolutely fail to do so in the actual article. Very cool.
One thing worth mentioning is that the two videos on this page are NOT typical gameplay scenarios. The first one even said as much in the reply to you asking if you could use it for this article
Great summary! Also, do not forget that the banning is not as strict as the US, where they had to censor games like Giants: Citizen Kabuto, because the sirens had bare breasts. Nipples and nudity are fine if they are not the center of the game world, as long as no intercourse is portrayed the game will probably end up…
Interesting. I didn’t know this was influencing other countries. Bummer.
A little clarification: The system of age restriction and “the approach to bloody content in games” is not “extremely draconian” anymore. That’s not because it has been eased. As far as I know, it hasn’t. But the criterias and the reception of…
I’m not 100% what you’re thinking of when you say save points. I’m assuming you mean like the bonfire system, which is more like checkpoints of progression through levels as well as fast-travel points.
Exactly, metroid started and defined an entire genre of games that are nonlinear and have maze-like maps that require backtracking and experimentation to see if you can find a new area to explore. That’s not an oversight, that’s an intentional design feature. It’s like complaining that mario jumps too much.
This is my first Metroid game
Exactly.
Yeah, I thought the Quiet Robe scene showed the right amount of emotion. She doesn’t know this guy, she just met him, and presumably isn’t even entirely sure whether he was really on her side.
Agreed. Article is a poor take and comes off like Ian didn’t really look at all the amazing work in the games animation. Can’t get behind the article either, Samus is you and you are dope in this game. The accomplishments are yours in this Metroid more than ever, aside from the one hit kill nonsense this game is a…
You’re right, “numb” was the wrong word, I think she does visibly reveal that she cares, what I mean is that the reaction is muted because she’s had to learn to force herself to go on.
I definitely prefer this article to Barsanti’s over at AV Club, but as a huge Samus fan I still disagree with this take. What I loved about Dread is that she does show warmth, because she’s shown warmth since she saved the Baby Metroid in 1991. She’s a character who basically has Batman’s origin story (parents…
HELL YEAH. I noticed that too about how casually she treats Kraid. It’s so goddamn cool.
Pfft. Dread did more for her character thru body language alone than Other M did with its piles of garbage dialogue.
I can get behind the bulk of this article, but I’d like to hit the other side of the spectrum and say that Samus’ intro cutscene with Kraid gave me huge personality vibes without a single word said.
After watching that cutscene I get where you’re coming from but I think I disagree. The Samus in this game shows almost all of her emotion through body language. The fact that she lingers, staring at the body shows that she feels something. She’s acknowledging those emotions and internalizing them as well as the info…
Nobody who plays LoL should be allowed to talk.
Emulation has a massive performance overhead. The ratio of “system you can perfectly simulate” to “system it runs on” is pretty wide, and graphics accelerator hardware (as I understand it) is pretty useless because old consoles ran on completely different math than what GPUs are designed to do, so you have to get the…
A note for those who can’t read or only read the headline:
This article isn’t advocating that one should go out and sequence break Kraid and kill him quickly, but rather informing you and commenting on the cool fact that such a sequence break exists, followed by some context about the history of sequence breaking in Me…
