Seriously, by the end of the Marathon games in Marathon Infinity, they were asking the player to consider the idea of protagonists in fiction/myth, concepts written about by Joseph Campbell and how and why the same stories kept being told. Now it resurfaces as a corpse scavenging game.

It looks like Destiny tho. I still think Marathon is a bad choice since there is baggage there. I do think their other previous game Pathways into Darkness would be a better choice for an extraction shooter, since there is already kind of a lore reason for a bunch of dudes going into a pyramid to get loot from some

You could rearrange that last sentence to say a bungie era halo fan and it would still fit

Waaaait a minute, they’re rebooting Marathon, probably the third- or fourth-best story in all of video games...as a multiplayer shooter? That feels like when somebody decided Legacy of Kain should be a multiplayer thing and made Nosgoth. On one hand, the design work is amazing. On the other, don’t do this to Marathon,

It’s pretty disappointing how creatively bankrupt gameplay devs seem to be nowadays. I get there’s a money (read: greed) component vis-a-vis live services, but what a gut punch to see such a great art style be thrown into yet another PVP-fest.  At least give the assets and dev tools to a moonshot branch of the studio

Yeah it’s dogshit. They could have taken the property and done what ID did with Doom in 2016 but nah fuck it live service PVP baby!

Oh my god, the y2K Aesthetic is finally having its day! We’re gonna sweep aside all that shitty 80s retrofuturism for a bright, clean, beautiful design language in a game I can’t wait to-

So they took the amazing and insane lore that created the Marathon series and are...turning it into a GAAS PVP milk machine, got it. Welp, what’s the next IP to get ruined by late stage capitalism?

no gameplay in the trailer, who gives a shit.

If you aren’t going to show me the actual game I’m not interested in the slightest at this point.

Seems beautiful, but I just... have no interest in that style of shooter. It was the same way with Destiny for me - gorgeous art, cool lore, amazing feeling gunplay but everything else around it just doesn’t click for me.

This doesn’t look like shit to me. Just a trailer. No gameplay or real hints at what it will look like.
Though, I’m sure it’ll be great, this isn’t hyping me up any

I’m glad some folks are hype, but I cannot find the appeal outside of slickly produced teaser trailer that’s just setting vibes for an extraction shooter.

yea but it’s an extraction shooter so

Dude, you're not doing him any favours. Also, spell check.

I physically reeled when I hit the second part of Dancey’s response. Like while I thought the first part was deeply condescending and didn’t speak well of the man, at least I got the general point he was trying to make. The female designers he has heard pitches from are not for the kinds of games his company

These types are going to think they're right until they're proven to their face that they're not.

Dancey’s comments aside, Hargrave has a great point about the pipeline. Are gaming choices are indeed poorer for it. Gender preferences is part of it to be sure, which is the point of this article, but holy heck class/economics is an even bigger issue.

“The problem with lady designers is that they can’t appeal to my white man sensibilities about what kind of games wimmin folk want to play”

I hate this. Flat out hate it. The only way to make sure you can always play Alan Wake 2 (especially years and years from now) will be to pirate it. And it doesn’t need to be that way.

HMMMMMM
