I’m biased here since I’m a lifelong Godzilla fan, but out of the 30 or so movies I always felt Kong was one of the most boring opponents there was. Especially after Godzilla 2 in 2018 which will supposedly feature Rodan, Mothra and King Ghidorah? Kong would be a huge downgrade after that.

It’s technically a prequel to 2014 Godzilla I think. The idea was to have the group searching for Kong be the Monarch organization that was established in that movies timeline. This is to coincidence with the proposed (and unnecessary) Godzilla vs King Kong movie.
