Finally, a worthy upgrade to my 2011 3.6R Outback.  Oh wait, except for the damn CVT.  You’ll pry my 5 speed auto out of my cold dead hands!  (plus my wife is emotionally attached to the car and it has low miles and an excellent maintenance history).  COLD DEAD HANDS!

The 3.6 5 speed combo was great! Sure it wasn’t competitive for power or economy but it was the one you wanted if you were actually going to go outback with it.  It was a torquey motor and the 5 speed worked really well with it.

Macan can be had for under $40k. Top it with 2nd place in reliability rating (1st is Toyota of course) and nice interior and you have a winner.

I saw a vacationing senior couple in one of those globe crushing UNICAT expedition conversion vehicles pull up next to a lifted pickup one time at an intersection. The guy driving the pickup spent like a full minute with his neck craned out just looking around at the thing, dumbstruck. It was damn funny.
