“Studies have shown” that inconsistent parenting is more damaging to the developing psyche than all out negativity. The inability to predict the caregiver’s behaviour is very destructive.

There are some very odd people out there that have a very specific, singular notion of what “family” means, and godamn they will not let it rest until you agree with them. It’s incredibly tiring, not to mention rude and sometimes cruel. “Why aren’t you closer with your family?” is such an invasive question to ask.

I grew up with a mother who was bipolar. We always walked on eggshells because you never knew what would set her off. Physical abuse ended when I fought back; emotional abuse ended when I became mentally stronger than her. I found out she was raised the same way by her mother.
